Skeleton Coast, Torra Bay to Henties Bay
Fog, shipwrecks and 200 km between fuel. You'll love it or hate it.
The salt road down the Skeleton Coast is flat, straight and grey, and somehow one of the most memorable roads I've ridden. The fog rolls in off the Atlantic, the wrecks rust on the beach, and seals bark at you from Cape Cross. There is nothing out here and that's the point.
On the 2020 Tortoise trip we ran it south with one eye on the fuel gauge the whole way. Two hundred kilometres between pumps sounds fine on paper. It feels longer in the fog.

Good to know
- Fill up at Terrace Bay or Torra Bay if they're open, otherwise plan to Henties Bay.
- The salt road is slippery when the fog wets it. Ease off.
- Park gates have opening hours. Check them, or you'll be camping at a gate.
