Sendelingsdrif pont
A border crossing on a pont that runs when the river lets it.
Sendelingsdrif is a border post and a pont, and that's about it. The pont takes a car or a few bikes at a time across the Orange, between the Richtersveld on the South African side and the diamond country on the Namibian side. When the river's up, it doesn't run, and you go the long way round. Nobody apologises.
In 2004 I sat on the bank waiting for it, watching the water and wondering if I'd brought enough of everything. I hadn't. It worked out anyway.
