Klein-Aus Vista and the desert horses
Wild horses living on the edge of a desert, and a lodge in the mountains above them.
Nobody is quite sure how the horses of the Namib got there. Shipwreck, soldiers or a runaway stud farm, depending on who's telling it. What's certain is that they're there, at the Garub waterhole outside Aus, thin, tough and completely unbothered by you.
We stayed at Klein-Aus Vista on the 2020 Orange River trip. Big skies, good food, and a cold that came down the mountain at night like it had a grudge.

- Bring warm clothes. The desert nights are properly cold.
- Lüderitz and Kolmanskop ghost town are an easy ride west.
