Eisriesenwelt and Burg Hohenwerfen
Ice caves inside a mountain and a castle on a rock. "Short walk" is a lie.
Eisriesenwelt is the biggest ice cave in the world, a few kilometres of frozen halls inside the mountain above Werfen, lit by the lamps you carry. Below it, Burg Hohenwerfen sits on a rock in the valley like it was drawn by a child who'd just discovered castles.
The brochure said a short walk to the cave. It is a walk, a cable car, another walk and about 700 steps. In 2019 I did it in jeans and regretted all of it except the cave.
