Augrabies Falls
The Orange River throwing itself into a granite gorge.
After hundreds of kilometres of flat Northern Cape, Augrabies comes out of nowhere: the whole Orange River squeezing through a crack in the granite and dropping into a gorge. The rock is polished smooth and the noise goes right through you.
We stopped on the way back from Speedweek in 2014, mostly for the shade. Stayed for the sunset.

Good to know
- Stay on the paths. The polished rock is lethal, and people have died here.
- Go after good rains upcountry and the falls are huge.
- Upington is the nearest proper town for fuel and supplies.
